My intention with reading this book was to learn effective learning. I also wanted to unlearn learning methods that i have been taught growing up: limited retrieval, maximum repetition, low retention. Upon reading this text I found heavy emphasis on repetition, spaced repetition, retrieval, and spaced retrieval. Though obvious and simple, they can forgotten once we are out of the spheres of learning. Nearly five years out of any institutionalized education channel, I want low attrition methods of learning that are indeed, “sticky.” In the past, I have overemphasized on re-reading and lecture viewing. Those, this text argues are ineffective and time consuming. If instead, we put a heavy emphasis on quizzing (retrieval) and space revision, a deeper learning takes place. As testing is mostly a retrieval skill, we should strengthen the ability to recall information.
